Data Study Group Final Report: Artificial Intelligence for Decarbonisation's Virtual Centre of Excellence - Understanding Heat Pump Performance: Improving Efficiency and Adoption

Description

Data Study Groups are a two week-long event at The Alan Turing Institute bringing together some of the country’s top talent from data science, artificial intelligence, and wider fields, to analyse real-world data science challenges.

This report presents an analysis of automated methods for diagnosing underperformance in domestic heat pumps—a crucial step toward accelerating the transition to low-carbon heating solutions. The challenge owner, Artificial Intelligence for Decarbonisation's Virtual Centre of Excellence (ADViCE), is a collaborative initiative among Digital Catapult, Energy Systems Catapult, and The Alan Turing Institute. This Data Study Group aimed to develop data-driven approaches to identify performance issues related to system configuration, installation quality, and control strategies. The ultimate objective is to reduce through-life costs and increase homeowner confidence in adopting energy-efficient heat pumps.
