Workshop Digital infrastructure for Language Data in Switzerland: current state and perspectives

The members of the one-year project “Moving towards a national FAIR-compliant ecosystem of Federated Infrastructure for Language Data” (FAIR-FI-LD, co-funded through swissuniversities Open Science I program, Open Research Data) have organized a workshop dedicated to the existing infrastructure for language data in Switzerland and future perspectives of development. The workshop was organised by Johanna Miecznikowski and Elena Battaglia (USI) on behalf of FAIR-FI-LD, and has taken place at Università della Svizzera italiana on Monday, June 23rd, 2025 in Lugano. FAIR-FI-LD is led by the University of Zurich (CLARIN-CH and LiRI) in collaboration with ZHAW (Digital Discourse Lab) and USI (Istituto di studi italiani, E-Lab). The project members (Bubenhofer, Krasselt, Miecznikowski, Grisot, Zehr, Battaglia, Pavic, Vukovic) have presented their findings and dialogued with invited speakers (Rocci, Coppola, Avanzi, Delafontaine, Haeberli) to address epistemological and technical challenges of managing and interconnecting digital infrastructure for language data within and beyond Switzerland. The presentations covered three topics: (1) the design of corpus infrastructure to suit diverse language data and different research paradigms in linguistics and beyond; (2) case studies featuring recent linguistic corpora collected in Switzerland; (3) interoperability issues regarding metadata, formats, database design and query languages.
