Effect of Financial Stress on Students Academic Performance in Tertiary Institutions in Sokoto State: A Study of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, Nigeria

The paper examines the effect of financial stress on students’ academic performance in tertiary institutions in Sokoto state, Nigeria with particular reference to Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. The research employs survey research design, the study population consists of 197 respondents from the three departments in the Faculty of Management Sciences Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. The sample size of 132 was drawn using the kreije and Morgan (1970) table which were selected using stratified proportionate sampling technique. The data for the study were analyzed using both descriptive statistical methods and the use of correlations and regression analysis to test the hypotheses of the study, facilitated by the use of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27. The results reveal that financial stress significantly affects academic performance. Based on the findings, the study recommends the adoption of flexible tuition policies, improved welfare support systems and subsidized academic resources to reduce the adverse effects of financial stress on academic performance.
