Multi-Grade Class Teaching: Challenges and Opportunities to Elementary School Teachers
Authors/Creators
Description
This study examined the personal experiences, instructional challenges, and practical insights of thirteen public elementary teachers handling multi-grade classes in Marilog B District, under the Division of Davao City. Using a phenomenological approach, data were collected through one-on-one interviews and analyzed thematically to uncover authentic perspectives on multi-grade teaching in rural areas. The study revealed three prominent themes: teachers taking on expanded roles as creative instructional leaders, the emotional demands that shaped their resilience, and the development of teaching practices tailored to unique classroom realities. Despite facing limited institutional support, participants showed remarkable adaptability and a strong sense of commitment to their roles. Among the major challenges identified were overlapping teaching duties, time constraints, difficulty maintaining student engagement, and the lack of adequate materials and infrastructure. These challenges were intensified by the absence of formal training specifically for multi-grade instruction, forcing teachers to make constant adjustments and rely heavily on their own initiative. To cope, educators utilized differentiated strategies, peer-assisted learning, and flexible lesson planning. The study also surfaced valuable insights, including effective multi-level instruction, encouraging learner autonomy, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Overall, the findings suggest that while multi-grade teaching demands extra effort, it fosters resilience, creativity, and professional maturity. The research calls for sustained teacher development programs, stronger policy frameworks, and active community participation to improve support systems for multi-grade educators. In conclusion, multi-grade teaching though complex offers rich opportunities for both teacher and learner development when supported appropriately.
