Looking Forward – String Quartet, Opus 1
Authors/Creators
Description
Looking Forward (2023) is the first completed string quartet by Rodrigo Ferrari-Nunes. Written for two violins, viola, and cello, the quartet explores the dynamic interplay between rhythmic drive, modal ambiguity, and expressive articulation.
The work is structured through contrasting episodes that alternate between allegro, moderato, lento, and andantino sections. Rather than following a traditional sonata form, it evolves through cycles, interruptions, and asymmetrical transitions that avoid predictable resolutions. Pizzicato and arco effects, ritardandi, and shifts in texture function not as embellishments but as integral elements of the quartet's narrative language.
Each instrumental part participates equally in shaping the work’s identity, with emphasis on textural layering and reflexive pacing. The piece invites performers and listeners into a space of perceptual engagement, where form is discovered through attentive presence rather than predefined expectation.
