The Cognitive and Psychological Benefits of Vedic Mathematics: A Review
Description
This paper reviews the cognitive and psychological benefits of Vedic Mathematics, a system of mental
mathematics based on sixteen Sutras or word-formulae. Originating from ancient Indian traditions, Vedic
Mathematics offers fast, flexible, and creative problem-solving techniques. This review explores how its
unique approach to computation enhances cognitive functions such as working memory, attention, pattern
recognition, and executive functioning. Furthermore, it examines the psychological impacts of Vedic
Mathematics, including the reduction of math anxiety, the building of self-confidence and self-efficacy, and
the promotion of a positive learning experience. The paper also discusses the applications of Vedic
Mathematics in education, its alignment with psychological learning theories, and its cultural and
philosophical underpinnings. And finally, it addresses the limitations in current research and suggests future
directions for empirical validation.
