Basic verb vocabulary: An empirical approach to argument structure and word associations
- 1. Department of Computational Linguistics, Institute for Bulgarian Language, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
Description
The article discusses the results of a pilot survey on basic verb vocabulary
conducted through an online experiment in the form of language tasks employing
associative stimuli, thematic stimuli, and contextual and textual stimuli. An analysis
revolves around observations on the performance of the tasks by two focus groups
of children – 7- to 10-year-olds and 11- to 14-year-olds. Semantic frame
representations of the selected verbs are employed to explain the specifics of the respondents’
competence in recognising the selected verb meanings and the arguments
associated with a specific verb meaning.
