Description

This article proposes a hybrid theory for the economy of the United Federation of Planets, exploring its functionality within the acclaimed Star Trek franchise. It is argued that the economy operates on two distinct and complementary levels: a post-scarcity economy, with characteristics analogous to socialism, at the micro-scale (encompassing Federation starships, stations, and planets), and a system of value allocation and exchange, reminiscent of certain capitalist dynamics, at the macro-scale (involving large institutions and interaction with external entities). The theory justifies the persistence of "credits" or "values" in a utopian society as an essential mechanism for recognizing individual productivity, efficiently managing finite resources, and facilitating complex intergalactic interactions. This approach reconciles the Federation's lofty utopian ideals with the pragmatic realities of resource management and interstellar exchange, offering an inspiring model for future economic thought.
