The grade of Knight of the East and West of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, which precedes the grade of Knight Rosicrucian, represents, in a way, the apotheosis of the so-called "Red" Chapter of the High Grades.

The 17th grade is an important degree, as it is a turning point in the rite, preparing the candidate for the eighteenth grade of the rite, after which the Mason is received into the Areopagus. This degree is based on the first part of the Apocalypse of Saint John. In the ritual, the scene ends with the condemnation of Babylon. This degree is also a symbolic journey from the Exodus to the return to Jerusalem. The seventeenth degree prepares not only for the grade of Rosicrucian Knight with a Christ-like message, but also for the nineteenth degree, where the candidate on the journey discovers the heavenly Jerusalem. In a way, this degree is a passage from the Old Testament to the New Testament.

This initiative recalls the power of love and the theme of knowledge. The seventeenth degree is a passage leading to the next two degrees, where the mason will be able to deepen "love and knowledge".

Le grade de Chevalier  d’Orient et d’Occident du Rite écossais ancien et accepté précède le grade de Chevalier Rose-Croix représente, en quelque sorte, l’apothéose au Chapitre dit « Rouge » et faisant partie des Hauts grades.

Le 17e grade est un degré important, car il s’agit d’un tournant dans le rite, préparant le candidat au dix-huitième degré du rite, suite à quoi, le maçon est reçu à l’Aréopage. Ce degré est basé sur la première partie de l'Apocalypse de Saint-Jean. Dans le rituel, la scène se termine par la condamnation de Babylone. Ce grade est aussi un parcours symbolique de l'Exode au retour à Jérusalem. Le dix-septième degré prépare non seulement au grade de Chevalier Rose-Croix ayant un message christique, mais aussi au dix-neuvième degré où le candidat qui chemine découvre la Jérusalem céleste. Ainsi, ce degré est en quelque sorte un passage de l’Ancien Testament au Nouveau Testament.

Ce cheminement initiative rappelle la force de l’amour et le thème de la connaissance. Le dix-septième degré est un passage aboutissant aux deux degrés suivants où le maçon va pouvoir approfondir « amour et connaissance ».
