Description
Second-hand trade has experienced accelerated growth globally, driven by digitization, changes in consumer habits and the need for more sustainable economic models. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of resale markets on the promotion of the circular economy, with emphasis on the extension of the product life cycle, the transformation of consumer behavior and the role of digital tools. To this end, an exploratory and descriptive approach was adopted, based on secondary sources, academic literature, market reports and the analysis of platform cases, specifically the ThredUp, Depop and The RealReal platforms.
Through thematic and comparative analysis, four key dimensions were identified: (1) the reduction of environmental impact through reuse and refurbishment, (2) digitalization as an enabler of responsible consumption, (3) the evolution of consumer attitudes towards used goods, and (4) the cultural and regulatory challenges of second-hand trade. The results are evidence that resale markets not only promote circularity but also generate relevant social and economic benefits. Finally, recommendations for public policies, business strategies and future research aimed at consolidating a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable consumption model are proposed.
