Plant recruitment six years after the Samarco's tailings-dam disaster: Impacts on species richness and plant growth

Description

Files and Variables

File: 1 Soil chemical analysis.xlsx

Description: Soil samples used for chemical and nutritional analysis.

Variables

  • Independent variables (Column “Treatment“) are soils from affected and unaffected areas. With each repetition (9 samples per treatment)
  • Each column that folows are the soil parameters: soil pH in both H2O and KCl methods;  nutrients (P, K, Na, Ca2+, Mg2+); Al3+; potential acidity (H + Al); sum of bases (SB), effective Cation Exchange Capacity (t), potential Cation Exchange Capacity at pH 7.0 (T); base saturation (V%), Aluminum saturation (m%); Sodium Saturation Indices (ISNa%); Soil carbon content, or organic matter (MO); Remaining soil phosphorus content (P-rem); other elements (Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb);
  • Units of measurement: mg/dm3 (miligrams per cubic decimeter); cmolc/dm3 (charge per cubic decimeter); % (percentage); dag/kg (dekagram per kilogram); miligram per liter (mg/L);
  • Missing values: “-“

File: 2 Morphotypes list.xlsx

Description: Descriptive list of Morphotypes found in the soil seed bank experiment.

Variables

  • Columns: Morphotype code (number from 1 to 143, given to each morphotype at the moment of the experiment – after the after expert analysis some of these were After expert analysis, some individuals were considered to be of the same species and the final number is 116); Species/morphotype name (identification of each morphotype); Family (botanical Family).
  • Morfotipo (unidentified species, or only morphotype); NI (unidentified)

File: 2 Plant Recruitment.xlsx

Description:  Morphotypes found in each sample point. First sheet “sample per month”: data for each month; second sheet “total per sample”: data for the whole period summed.

Variables

  • Columns: “Region” (1Fundao, 2Paracatu, 3Candonga, see Fig1 and Materials & Methods section for coordinates); “Repetition” (five samples per region); “Season” (period of sampling - Wet or Dry); Month (from second to sixth month after the begining of experimente); “Treatment” (Affected or Unaffected); each following number is the plant morphotype code, according to “File: 2 Morphotypes list.xlsx”.

File: 3 Plant Growth - Dry biomass.xlsx

Description: Plant growth experiment data for dry biomass. Columns: Species “Ludwigia” and “Marsypianthes” for respectively Ludwigia octovalvis (Jacq.) P.H.Raven (Onagraceae) and Marsypianthes chamaedrys (Vahl) Kuntze (Lamiaceae); Organ, for plant part used in the analysis (root, stem, and leaves). Repetition (from 1 to 5)

Variables

  • Independent Variables: Treatment (Affected or Unaffected, respectively A and N).
  • Dependent Variable: Dry mass (in grams)
  • NA for not available

File: 3 Plant Growth - height and diameter.xlsx

Description: Plant growth experiment data for Height and diameter at ground level after 75 days of experiment. Columns: Species “Ludwigia” and “Marsypianthes” for respectively Ludwigia octovalvis (Jacq.) P.H.Raven (Onagraceae) and Marsypianthes chamaedrys (Vahl) Kuntze (Lamiaceae); Parameter measured monthly; treatment; Repetition; each following column is a measurement taken after 15 days.

Variables

  • Independent Variables: Treatment (Affected or Unaffected, respectively A and N).
  • Dependent Variable: Height (in centimeters) and Diameter (in millimeters)
  • NA for not available
