Description

Leptostylopsis antillarum (Fisher 1925:5).

Leptostylopsis albosignatus (Fisher 1935:53), new synonymy

Type locality: Of L. antillarum, Culebra Island, Puerto Rico; L. albosignatus, Ponce, Puerto Rico.

These two species were distinguished by Fisher (1935) by differences in elytral coloration. Typical L. antillarum has a transverse, thin, W-shaped, whitish line at the apical one-third of the elytra (Fig. 1, b), while typical L. albosignatus has a large, rectangular, whitish patch at the middle of the elytra (Fig. 1, c). Types of both species were examined and compared with a series of 34 Puerto Rican specimens. Within this material there is broad range of variation in the elytral color pattern, with some individuals being entirely plain (Fig. 1, a), some marked with a large, rectangular, whitish patch, and others with a transverse, thin, W-shaped, whitish line. Specimens within series from any given locality may exhibit the full range of variation.
