Probing the Multiphase Circumgalactic Medium with the MUSE-ALMA Haloes Survey
Description
The gas cycling in the circumgalactic regions of galaxies is known to be multi-phase. The MUSE-ALMA Haloes survey gathers a large multi-wavelength observational sample of absorption and emission data with the goal to significantly advance our understanding of the physical properties of such circumgalactic gas. These observations illustrate the synergy between MUSE and ALMA in particular by providing a complete probe of the cold (atomic and molecular) gas reservoir, the stellar content, the metallicity and kinematics of gas around galaxies. Results indicate that HI-selection reveals galaxy overdensities, that molecular and ionised gas trace each other kinematically and evidence of gas accretion onto galaxies. This statistical sample also provides a first map of the cold gas around galaxies which will benefit up-coming facilities including BlueMUSE and ELT/HARMONI.
