Latest advances in our understanding of the circumgalactic medium with MUSE

I will review the latest advances in our understanding of the circumgalactic medium made possible by the transformative nature of MUSE. I will also present an outlook on how future observations in the ELT era will bring us closer to a complete view of the gas-galaxy connection over cosmic time.
