MUSE: anatomy of a success

As demonstrated by various indicators, such as the pressure factor and publication rate, MUSE is a tremendous success. To analyze the reasons behind this success, I will address the following questions: What were the original intentions when we proposed the project 23 years ago? How did we design and build it? How are we currently utilizing it? For what science? What is the impact of AO? Did it match our original expectations and what needs to be improved? Can we derive some guidelines and principles from what we have learned? What's next after MUSE?
