The Josef Floren Replica Lists of Classical and Hellenistic Greek Sculpture (JoFReL)
Description
The dataset comprises the academic legacy of Josef Floren (1941–2012), a classical archaeologist who compiled by bibliographic research extensive lists of Roman replicas of Classical and Hellenistic Greek sculpture. Created between 1986 and 2012, the data includes 1,352 files categorizing sculptures by type, artist, region, and genre, based on the method of “Kopienkritik” and “Meisterforschung.” Though incomplete and inconsistently structured, the dataset offers a unique resource for exploring Greek sculptural typologies and Roman copying practices. Its comprehensiveness enables new analyses of replica relationships and invites reassessment of long-held assumptions in classical archaeology.
