On Reincarnation. Part I: Madhyamaka – Prasangika

Description

This work presents a rigorous and accessible philosophical exploration of the phenomenon of reincarnation through the lens of Madhyamaka–Prasangika logic — the most refined school of thought within the Middle Way tradition of Mahāyāna Buddhism.

Part I introduces a structured, cause-and-effect-based analysis of consciousness, challenging materialist assumptions and establishing, through classical and contemporary reasoning, the continuity of individual mindstreams.

Grounded in the living tradition of the Gelug school, and inspired by the teachings of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and Venerable Geshe Jampa Tinley, the text systematically explores the fundamental question: Can consciousness arise from anything other than consciousness?

Through logical inquiry — including analogies from nature, Buddhist categories of phenomena, and the rejection of randomness as a valid explanatory model — the authors demonstrate that the only consistent explanation for the emergence of consciousness is its continuity from a previous moment of consciousness. This leads to a compelling and coherent philosophical foundation for the reality of reincarnation.

The work is both intellectually precise and spiritually grounded. It appeals to philosophers, Buddhist practitioners, and anyone seeking a rational, contemplative approach to life, death, and rebirth — without requiring prior background in Buddhist terminology.

This is the first in a two-part series. The upcoming second part will introduce an axiomatic and implication-based proof of reincarnation, designed to speak equally to Western logical frameworks and Eastern contemplative traditions.
