Dynamical reconstruction of Southern Ocean and Antarctic climate variability since 1700

This archive contains the data associated with the following study: Dynamical reconstruction of Southern Ocean and Antarctic climate variability since 1700, by Quentin Dalaiden, Hugues Goosse, Paul R. Holland and Antoine Barthélemy.

Atmospheric reanalyses

Regarding the atmospheric reconstructions at annual resolution, the variables included in the archive are:

- sea-level pressure (slp)
- sea ice concentration (sic)
- meridional surface winds (vas)
- zonal surface winds (uas)
- 2-m air temperature (t2m)
- total precipitation (prcp)
- regional sea ice extent for the main 5 antarctic regions (sie)

Station-based atmospheric reanalyses

Files: station-atm-recon.<ESM>.y.ano.1958-2023.dalat25.nc

The reconstructions performed with the 10 ESMs are provided as well as the mean averaged over the 10 reconstructions. Each NetCDF file corresponds to one reconstruction based on the specific ESM. For each variable, along with the reconstruction, an estimation of the uncertainty is provided. All fields are anomalies relative to the 1981–2010 period.

Paleo-based atmospheric reanalysis

File: paleo-atm-recon.iCESM1.y.ano.1700-2000.dalat25.nc

For each variable, along with the reconstruction, an estimation of the uncertainty is provided. All fields are anomalies relative to the 1961–1990 period.

Atmospheric forcing

File: transient-paleo-atm-forcing.m.170001-202312.nc

Due to the heavy files for the atmospheric forcing, we only provide the transient atmospheric forcing at the monthly resolution. The file includes all the variables required to force the NEMO–SI3 model.

Oceanic simulations

Files: transient-{paleo,instrumental}-simulation.<var>.y.{1701-2023,1958-2023}.nc

The following variables are included in the archive:

- oceanic temperature (thetao)
- oceanic salinity (so)
- meridional oceanic velocities (nn)
- zonal oceanic velocities (ee)
- sea ice concentration (sic)
- sea surface temperature (sst)
- barotropic stream function (bsf)

The archive only includes oceanic variables at annual resolution and covers the Southern Ocean. Sea-ice concentration is also available at monthly resolution (useful for computing sea-ice area/extent).
