Description
The traditional Indian activity of organic farming has once again gained importance as the undesirable effects of chemical-based agriculture come into the limelight. Organic farming has a history and follows certain methods that are very important in the modern world, when population is growing at alarming rates and health of the soil is deteriorating. Returning to organic practice is geared towards the emergent challenges of environment and economy that hound conventional agricultural practices characterized by a heavy reliance on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Vital principles of organic farming work toward practices that are sustainable, supportive of biodiversity, fertile soils, and balance for ecosystems. Organic farming remains an extremely viable alternative to conventional agriculture, despite low yields and high costs, and brings along a multitude of ecological benefits and agricultural sustainability. This paper also provides some case studies from India in terms of successful implementation in increasing crop quality and the resulting benefits for farmer income.
