Einstein himself believed that theory of general relativity could not properly function without a medium. Even though Einstein and others could not find the medium, doesn’t mean that one does not exists.
The true nature of particles such as electrons, quarks, leptons .... is still a mystery, they tend to evolve into certitude without any additional reasonable argument.  Nobody ever reasonably explained how gravity works either, and what about the concept of time ..... ?
