Grenzüberschreitende Ungleichheiten in der Großregion | Inégalités transfrontalières dans la Grande Région

English – European integration has redefined border regions from national peripheries to spaces of opportunity and cooperation. However, social and economic inequalities in their cross-border dimension remain marginal in research on these regions. This thematic issue addresses this gap through the case study of the Greater Region, encompassing Luxembourg, Wallonia, Grand Est, Saarland, and Rhineland-Palatinate. Despite advanced economic integration, the region exhibits stark disparities in income, housing, and public service access. The contributions presented examine how such inequalities shape labour markets, mobility, and social cohesion, while also addressing the shortcomings of current statistical tools to capture transborder dynamics. From the role of wage differentials in driving cross-border work to the housing pressures on surrounding territories, this issue highlights how integration processes can produce both inclusion and exclusion. By focusing on the Greater Region, it contributes to broader debates about inequality beyond national frameworks and underscores the necessity of transnational analytical tools for understanding marginalisation within a unified Europe.

Français – Avec l’intégration européenne, les régions frontalières ont acquis une nouvelle importance, passant de zones périphériques marginalisées à des espaces de coopération et de développement. Pourtant, les inégalités sociales et économiques dans leur dimension transfrontalière restent encore marginales dans la recherche sur ces régions. Ce numéro thématique aborde cette lacune à travers l’exemple de la Grande Région, un espace transfrontalier comprenant le Luxembourg, la Wallonie, le Grand Est, la Sarre et la Rhénanie-Palatinat. Malgré une forte intégration économique, cette région demeure marquée par des écarts importants en matière de revenus, d’accès au logement et aux services publics. Les contributions réunies ici analysent comment ces disparités façonnent la mobilité, le marché du travail et la cohésion sociale, tout en soulignant les limites des outils statistiques traditionnels pour saisir la complexité des dynamiques transfrontalières. Ce numéro ambitionne ainsi de rendre visible la spécificité des inégalités transfrontalières et d’enrichir la réflexion scientifique sur les formes contemporaines de marginalisation en Europe.

Deutsch – Im Zuge der europäischen Integration haben Grenzregionen neue Aufmerksamkeit erfahren: von nationalen Randlagen wandelten sie sich zu Räumen der Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung. Dennoch bleiben soziale und wirtschaftliche Ungleichheiten in ihren grenzüberschreitenden Dimensionen in diesen Regionen in der Forschung noch randständig. Dieses Themenheft widmet sich dieser Forschungslücke anhand der Großregion, die Luxemburg, Wallonien, Grand Est, das Saarland und Rheinland-Pfalz umfasst. Trotz fortgeschrittener wirtschaftlicher Integration bestehen erhebliche Disparitäten bei Einkommen, Wohnraum und Zugang zu öffentlichen Dienstleistungen. Die versammelten Beiträge untersuchen, wie diese Ungleichheiten Arbeitsmärkte, Mobilität und gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt prägen und zugleich die Grenzen bestehender statistischer Instrumente zur Erfassung grenzüberschreitender Dynamiken aufzeigen. Von der Rolle von Lohnunterschieden über Immobilienpreise bis hin zu grenzüberschreitenden Arbeitsmobilitäten beleuchten die Autor:innen die Ambivalenzen der Integration. Die Großregion dient hierbei als exemplarisches Untersuchungsfeld, um grenzüberschreitende Ungleichheiten sichtbar zu machen und die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit sozialer Marginalisierung jenseits nationaler Kontexte zu erweitern.
