Terrapene carolina major

The Gulf Coast Box Turtle inhabits the humid areas at the coasts of western Florida and South Carolina. The purest form lives in Florida. hybrids with any of the other subspecies. These are the largest T. carolina subspecies reaching 20 cm in length. Apart from its length, the strongly flaring rear margins are characteristic for the subspecies. Colours are not really discriminative although white head markings occur frequently in adult males as do red colours on the front legs.
