Leopold Immanuel Jacob van Dort, a Jewish-Christian Professor of the Dutch East India Company

Description

Leopold Immanuel Jacob van Dort, a Jewish-Christian Professor of the Dutch East India Company

This biography of Leopold Immanuel Jacob van Dort (1712–1761) features his three translated and annotated books, selected chapters from his Hebrew New Testament and Qur’ān, and six scholarly papers that explore his intellectual contributions and historical significance.

Leopold Immanuel Jacob van Dort was born as Jokeb Moses van Dort in The Hague, Holland. He came from a Jewish teaching family—a loving, patchwork household with children from two marriages and a foster child of Christian noble descent. After working as a hazzan and private teacher in Dordrecht, Cleves, ‘s Heerenberg, and Jülich, he converted to Christianity with his foster brother, to set up a printing house for newspapers during the peace congress of Aix-la-Chapelle. Though the venture was unsuccessful, it set him on his path as a private Hebrew teacher and writer of three German conversion books.

He was an avid correspondent; he wrote many letters with prominent Jewish and Christian scholars. Aspiring to become a university professor, he embarked to Sri Lanka for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to become a Hebrew professor at the Seminary of Colombo. During these years he visited the Jews of Cochin, India, where he translated the New Testament and the Qur’ãn into Hebrew for Ezekiel Rahabi. These manuscripts now housed in the Cambridge Library and the Library of Congress—among the earliest Hebrew translations of religious texts from other traditions—are distinguished by their spirit of respect and tolerance.

Leopold also translated the famous excerpts of the Chronicles of the Jews of Cochin and arranged the printing of the prayer books of Cochin in Amsterdam. Because he was a convert, some contemporary scholars claim that he was involved in writing some fabricated Hebrew polemic texts from that time. This book aims to give more insights into his life, and to answer a lingering question: Who authored those fake, controversial letters?

Ir. Mascha van Dort (1968) studied Applied Physics at the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands and has worked in behavioral science research since 1998. Driven by a deep curiosity about what motivates people across cultures and eras, she applies a fact-based approach and conducted research in over 20 archives worldwide to uncover the full story of Leopold. Her analysis connects historical context and environment with personal needs, attitudes, actions, and behavior.

The book provides unique insights into an 18th-century Jewish teacher’s life—his conversion, patronage, network, academic aspirations, and encounters with Jewish communities facilitated by the VOC. It is richly illustrated with 18th-century drawings and paintings of The Hague, Dordrecht, Aachen, Colombo, and Cochin.
