Use of sick pens in turkey farming

Description

According to Directive 98/58/EC, sick or injured poultry must receive immediate care, including isolation in suitable accommodation. A sick pen is a designated area for temporarily housing birds requiring special attention, reducing competition, stress, and disease spread while promoting recovery. It must be easily accessible, well-lit, and physically separated from healthy birds. Proper bedding, lower stocking density (≥50% lower than the main group), and access to feed and water are essential. Daily monitoring helps identify birds needing treatment or humane euthanasia (Regulation 1099/2009). Sick pens should be modular for adaptability, particularly during critical periods (e.g., early brooding or pre-slaughter). Effective management, including proper use of hides, minimizes aggression and supports rehabilitation, ensuring compliance with animal welfare regulations.
