Ushbu ilmiy maqolada XVI–XIX asrlar davomida O‘rta Osiyo shaharlarida hunarmandchilik faoliyatining rivojlanishi, uning asosiy yo‘nalishlari, iqtisodiy va madaniy hayotdagi roli, hunarmandlar gildiyalari, ustaxonalar, ishlab chiqarish jarayonlari, shuningdek, chet ellik sayohatchilar va tadqiqotchilar nigohidagi tasvirlar asosida keng tahlil etiladi. Maqolada Buxoro, Xiva, Qo‘qon, Samarqand, Toshkent kabi shaharlardagi hunarmandchilik taraqqiyoti tarixiy manbalar asosida yoritiladi.
