SEEBLOCKS.eu Impact Event How the DEP project SEEBLOCKS.eu has impacted European Blockchain/DLT Standardisation
Description
The SEEBLOCKS.eu impact event took place on 10th April 2025 in Brussels and served as a platform for ICT experts to showcase how the 24-month project had successfully accelerated blockchain standardisation. This was achieved through dedicated financial support provided to European experts diligently working in the field, demonstrating how blockchain and DLT could serve society as relevant technology enablers.
Blockchain, as we have observed, proved to be a turning-point innovation, standing out as a novel horizontal IT revolution with a widespread impact across all industries. This disruptive technology, gaining traction and becoming mainstream, held the potential to bring lasting benefits to societies globally. To realise this potential, proper standardisation was crucial to reflect the needs of its global user base spanning all continents. Furthermore, the growth in blockchain usage led to a parallel increase in the demand for blockchain professionals, consequently driving up the need for blockchain skills. Addressing blockchain skills shortages and meeting both current and future demands for an exponentially growing blockchain workforce was therefore significant.
Through SEEBLOCKS.eu, 20 European experts were empowered to contribute to Blockchain/DLT standardisation efforts, share blockchain insights, and incorporate these findings into the European Rolling Plan for ICT Standardisation. SEEBLOCKS.eu also developed an online blockchain training course, intended as a sustainable resource for the broader DLT/Blockchain community for learning purposes, alongside a freely accessible Standards Visualisation Tool designed to foster education and capacity building in Blockchain/DLT standardisation.
The event's structure first explored the regulatory landscape influencing DLT & Blockchain activities, including the regulatory Acts that had come into force, such as the AI Act, Data Act, European Digital Identity (EUDI), electronic identification, authentication, and trust services (eIDAS), and the EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW), among others. Following this, an overview of the technical contributions made by SEEBLOCKS.eu experts in bringing the European perspective to standardisation efforts was presented.
The event then shifted its focus to providing a platform for the twenty experts to articulate the impact of the funding they received, highlighting the lasting results achieved and outlining the necessary next steps to ensure the longevity of this investment. This was complemented by a demonstration showcasing the utility of the Blockchain/DLT Training Course. The day concluded with the presentation of SEEBLOCKS.eu prizes to those exceptional experts who had made significant contributions in their Blockchain/DLT endeavors.
