AUTISM (AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER)
Description
Autism, also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), presents as a complex developmental disability characterized by significant challenges in social interaction. It manifests in various forms, ranging from mild to severe. The onset typically occurs before the age of 3, with parents often noticing concerns about language development between 12 and 18 months. Autism is marked by abnormal and impaired development, and its severity varies among children.
Autism spectrum disorder comprises previously distinct conditions such as autism, Asperger's syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and unspecified pervasive developmental disorder. Although some still use the term "Asperger's syndrome," it's generally considered to represent the milder end of the autism spectrum.
Onset typically occurs in early childhood, leading to challenges in societal functioning across various domains such as social interactions, academic pursuits, and professional endeavors. While signs of autism often emerge within the first year of life, a subset of children initially appears to develop typically before experiencing a regression between 18 and 24 months, exhibiting autism symptoms thereafter.
Despite lacking a cure, early and intensive interventions hold significant promise in positively impacting the lives of many affected children.
