Abstract
Bhaaskara Das, also known as Madhurakavi Bhaaskara Dasu (1892 - 1952), was the first film lyricist and a multi-faceted artist in the Tamil film industry. He started writing songs at the age of 16. He was accepted as the court poet of the Ramanathapuram king Bhaaskara Sethupathi and lost his original name of Vellaichami and was called Bhaaskara Das. In 1931, he wrote all the songs in the first talkie film of the Tamil film industry, Kalidas, and became the first film lyricist in the Tamil film industry. It is also said that the songs written by Bhaaskara Das for his drama were also used for this film.
He was a master of the three Tamil languages of Iyal, Isai and Natakam. As a result, he was a screenwriter, dialogue writer, and song writer, a drama actor, and an acting coach. He is also a collector of rural folk songs and a composer of new musical forms. His songs have been compiled under the name 'Madhurakavi Bhaskaradas Kirthanaikal'.
