Data for timing-dependent synergies between noninvasive motor cortex and spinal cord stimulation in chronic cervical spinal cord injury

Description

Timing-dependent synergies between noninvasive motor cortex and spinal cord stimulation in chronic cervical spinal cord injury

This repository contains noninvasive electrophysiological data collected as part of this project.

Repository Structure

Each participant has a dedicated folder containing three files:

  • Configuration file (.toml): Metadata.

  • Data table (.csv): Trial-by-trial metrics including stimulation parameters and motor-evoked potentials (MEP) sizes.

  • MAT-file (.mat): Contains sliced MEP timeseries.

Configuration File (*.toml)

This file specifies:

  • channel: Names of EMG or trigger channels.

  • channel_type: Type of channel (EMG or trigger).

  • t_slice_min: Start time for the MEP area-under-curve (AUC) calculation window (seconds).

  • t_slice_win: Length of the AUC calculation window (seconds).

  • t_slice_minmax: Variable that marks the start and end times of the sliced MEPs in the mat file.

Loadable with:

  • Python: standard TOML libraries (e.g., toml).

  • MATLAB:  matlab-toml library (https://github.com/g-s-k/matlab-toml)

Data Table (*.csv)

Key columns:

  • ix: Local trial number (index).

  • datetime: Timestamp of trial (reset to 1970-01-01).

  • participant: Participant identifier.

  • participant_condition: Cohort descriptor (SCI or AB).

  • target_muscle: Targeted muscle.

  • stim_type: Protocol identifier.

  • protocol: Detailed protocol identifier.

  • ix_run: Participant run subdivision index.

  • TMSInt: Cortical stimulation intensity (% MSO).

  • TSCSInt: Spinal stimulation intensity (mA).

  • MeasuredDelay: Delay between TMS and TSCS triggers (s).

  • SPI_target: Targeted pairing interval (ms).

  • TSCSIntPct: Targeted spinal stimulation intensity (% RMT).

  • TMSIntPct: Targeted cortical stimulation intensity (% RMT).

  • cmct: Central motor conduction time used in analysis subsequent to the manual adjustment (ms).

  • TMS_RMT: TMS motor threshold (% MSO).

  • TSCS_RMT: TSCS motor threshold (mA).

  • cmct_post_adjustment_manual: Manual adjustment of the central motor conduction time post-experiment.

  • case_invalid: Indicator of invalid trials.

  • datetime_posix: POSIX timestamp.

  • onset_time_tms: Estimated TMS MEP onset.

  • cathode: Cathode location.

  • anode: Anode arrangement.

  • auc_*: MEP size as AUC per channel (indexed by channel entries from the config).

  • Clinical or demographic measures: AIS, GRASSP_L/R, MMT_TS*, MotorLevel, NLI, UEMS_L/R, cueq, ehi, handedness_post, time_post_injury, type_of_injury, sex, age_binned, age_ranked.

MAT-file (*.mat)

Contains two variables:

  • ep_sliced: Array (responses x time points x channels) containing sliced MEP responses based.

  • t_sliced: Array (1x time points) indicating time stamps of each sample point.

Can be loaded using:

  • MATLAB: load function.

  • Python: Example using h5py

import h5py

with h5py.File('file.mat', 'r') as mat_file:

    mep = mat_file['ep_sliced'][:]
