BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: AN ANALYSIS OF FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE (IPV)

Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a pressing social issue with profound consequences for individuals and communities. This study examines the incident characteristics of IPV cases, focusing on the influence of defendant and victim gender, as well as the correlation between drug use, victims prior abuse, and post-incarceration domestic partner violence. Leveraging data from 16 counties, our analysis reveals significant variations in incident characteristics based on gender, with male defendants more likely to have witnesses present and female defendants exhibiting a higher propensity for weapon use. Additionally, a moderate positive correlation between drug use and prior abuse highlights the interconnected nature of substance abuse and victimization experiences in shaping IPV dynamics. These findings underscore the need for gender-sensitive interventions and comprehensive strategies that address the complex interplay of factors contributing to IPV perpetuation.
