Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" and "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift in the Light of Intertextual Dialogue

Description

 This article explores the intertextual relationship between Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. Despite evident thematic and structural affinities, this connection remains largely underexplored in scholarly literature. The study focuses on the transformation of Swift’s model of reality in Huxley’s dystopian narrative. The main objectives include analyzing the motif of travel, the perception of external reality by the protagonists, and the development of their worldviews. Drawing on Julia Kristeva’s intertextuality theory, the article argues that Huxley engages in a dialogic relationship with Swift, guiding the reader toward deeper self-reflection and understanding of contemporary society. While both protagonists—Gulliver and John the Savage—embark on journeys that lead to enlightenment and disillusionment, Huxley presents a darker, more apocalyptic vision of the future.

У статті досліджується інтертекстуальний зв’язок між романом Олдоса Гакслі Прекрасний новий світ та сатиричною оповіддю Джонатана Свіфта Мандри Ґуллівера. Незважаючи на очевидні тематичні паралелі, ця взаємодія поки що недостатньо представлена в науковому дискурсі. Мета дослідження — виявити трансформацію моделі реальності Свіфта в романі Гакслі. Розглядаються мотив подорожі, специфіка сприйняття зовнішнього світу героями та еволюція їхніх світоглядних уявлень. Спираючись на теорію інтертекстуальності Ю. Крістевої, авторка демонструє, як Гакслі вступає в діалог зі своїм попередником, занурюючи читача в процес самопізнання й осмислення сучасності. Обидва герої — Ґуллівер і Джон Дикар — у процесі подорожей доходять до песимістичного висновку про моральне й духовне падіння людства, проте Гакслі, на відміну від Свіфта, позбавляє читача навіть слабкої надії на порятунок.
