Financing Sustainable Research Software

This study presents the results of a national survey on the funding, maintenance, and sustainability of research software within the Natural and Engineering Sciences (NES) domain in the Netherlands. Conducted as part of the TDCC-NES roadmap and supported by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), the study explores how research software is developed, maintained, and supported across institutions and disciplines. The report covers survey findings on roles and responsibilities, budgeting practices, time allocation, and career recognition, and highlights striking differences across research fields. Recommendations focus on institutional recognition, funding policy changes, and long-term support strategies for sustainable research software.
