SSNO: A simple Standard Name Ontology

  • 1. ROR icon Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Description

The SSNO ontology is created to use the concept of "standard names" in semantic description of research data. The concept of standard names is introduced and used by the earth science community, known as cf-conventions. However, the authors have no affiliation with the earth community, but the concept works well to describe engineering data, too.

As the concept of standard names has not been semantically described, this serves as a first attempt to do so. This ontology describes the concept semantically in a very basic way, thus not all concepts of the original cf-conventions are covered. Future version may extend it.

Note, that the SSNO ontology is particularly suitable for metadata description, which already uses the metadata4ing ontology (which was the original intention of the authors). Numerical values can be made easier to find by describing them using a standard name.

Please refer to the guide in the GitHub repository for example usages and further information.

The ontology website documenting the classes can be found here.
