Forest fires are a significant threat to India's forest ecosystems, biodiversity, and local
communities. To mitigate and manage forest fires, the Indian government has launched various
initiatives and policies. The National Forest Fire Action Plan published in 2013, aims to prevent, detect,
and control forest fires. Additionally, various states have their own policies and guidelines for forest
fire management. India also collaborates with international organizations to share knowledge and
resources. Effective forest fire management involves prevention, detection, control, and community
engagement. Prevention measures include creating fire breaks and conducting awareness campaigns.
Detection involves using satellite imagery, drones, and ground-based sensors to detect forest fires early.
Control measures include suppressing forest fires using techniques like manual beating, smothering,
counter-firing, fire lines, and dousing. Community engagement is also crucial, as local communities
can be educated about forest fire risks and involved in prevention and detection efforts. Furthermore,
post-fire management is essential, involving assessing damage, rehabilitating affected areas, and
restoring ecosystems. Various forest fire management models, such as the "Prescribed Burning Model",
"Fire Suppression Model", and "Community-based Fire Management Model" can be adopted and
tailored to suit specific regional conditions. The study aims to document the different forest models
persisting in India. These models can help optimize forest fire management strategies, reduce the risk
of forest fires, and promote sustainable forest management practices. To improve forest fire
management capacity building, community participation, technology integration, and a comprehensive
policy framework are necessary.
