Epirus kralı Pyrrhus’un sikkeleri

Öz

Epirus, topraklarının güney kısmı Yunanistan kuzey kısmı da Arnavutluk arasında paylaşılan antik bir bölgedir. Yunan kolonistler tarafından kurulan Epirus’un tarih boyunca en fazla öne çıktığı süreç, Epirus kralı Aekides’in oğlu Pyrrhus’un saltanatı dönemidir. Epirus kralı Pyrrhus’un egemenliği döneminde Makedonya, Roma ve Kartaca’ya karşı birçok savaş yapılmıştır. Pyrrhus, özellikle Güney İtalya ve Sicilya’da büyük başarılar elde ederek Epirus savaş tarihinde çok önemli bir yer elde etmiştir. Pyrrhus’un kazandığı zaferler neticesinde Epirus ekonomisi gelişim göstermiş ve sikke basımı artmıştır. Bu bağlamda, Pyrrhus’un sikkelerine odaklanıldığında Epirus’ta basılanlarda 5 tip, Siracusa’da 11 tip ve Makedonya’da ise tek tip sikke tespit edilmiştir. Bu sikke tiplerinin her biri incelendiğinde sistemli bir ikonografi izlendiği görülmüştür. Makale kapsamında öncelikle Epirus kralı Pyrrhus’un hayatı ve zaferleri ele alınmıştır. Ardından Pyrrhus’un saltanatı döneminde basılan sikke tipleri hem ekonomik hem ikonografik bağlamda incelenmiştir. Epirus kralı Pyrrhus’un politik amaçları ve ideolojileri doğrultusunda sikkeleri üzerindeki betimlerle ve sembollerle yarattığı mitolojik imaj değerlendirilmiştir. Sikkeler üzerindeki kahraman Akhilleus betimiyle kral Pyrrhus’un tanrısal ve mitolojik soyuna atıf yapıldığı gözlenmiştir.  Tanrı ve tanrıça figürleriyle Pyrrhus’un başarılarına ve onun getirdiği bolluk dönemine işaret edildiği ve mısır koçanı, meşe çelengi gibi sembollerle ise Epirus bölgesinin değerlerine vurgu yapıldığı görülmüştür.

Coins of king Pyrrhus of Epirus

Abstract

Epirus is an ancient region whose territory is shared between Greece in the south and Albania in the north. Founded by Greek colonists, Epirus' most prominent period throughout history is the reign of Pyrrhus, son of Aekides, king of Epirus. During the reign of Pyrrhus, King of Epirus, many wars are fought against Macedonia, Rome and Carthage. Pyrrhus achieves great success, especially in Southern Italy and Sicily, and thus gains a very important place in the history of wars of Epirus. As a result of Pyrrhus' victories, the economy of Epirus develops and coinage increases. In this context, when focusing on Pyrrhus' coins, 5 types are identified in those minted in Epirus, 11 types in Syracuse, and a single type in Macedonia. Within the scope of the article, firstly the life and victories of King Pyrrhus of Epirus are discussed. Then, the coin types minted during the reign of Pyrrhus are studied in both economic and iconographic contexts. The mythological image that Pyrrhus created with the depictions and symbols on his coins in line with his political aims and ideologies has been evaluated. It is observed that the depiction of the hero Achilles on the coins is a reference to the divine and mythological lineage of Pyrrhus. It is observed that the achievements of Pyrrhus and the period of abundance are pointed out with the figures of gods and goddesses, and the values of the Epirus region are emphasized with symbols such as the corn cob and the oak wreath.
