Analysis of Media Convergence Approaches of Channels and Arise News Television Stations in Nigeria

Background: The media landscape has undergone significant transformations in recent years, driven by technological advancements, shifting audience preferences, and increasing importance of digital media. Media convergence, which refers to the integration of different media forms and platforms, has become a key strategy for media organisations seeking to remain competitive and relevant in this changing environment. In Nigeria, the television industry has been at the forefront of media convergence, with many stations incorporating digital media and online platforms into their operations. Channels Television and Arise News are two prominent television stations in Nigeria that have embraced media convergence as a key part of their broadcasting strategies. Despite the growing importance of media convergence, there remains a need for a deeper understanding of how different media organisations approach convergence, and the implications of these approaches for the media industry as a whole. Objective: This study investigated the media convergence approaches of Channels Television and Arise News. Method: The survey research design was adopted and employed interview guide to collect data qualitatively. The population consisted of the staff of the production department, programmes department, and news and current affairs department of the two stations. Eighteen staff were selected purposively with six from each of the departments as samples. Result: Findings show that the staff have responded positively in adapting to media convergence in the work place by daily usage of laptops and desktops, streaming services, mobile apps, websites, internet, 8k and 6k video cameras for video production and audio digital mixer for clarity of audio transmitted, smartphone were used for communication and also advanced contents delivery and contents production timelessly which were posted on their social media platforms; although power failure and high cost of media technology tools and high cost of training were part of the factors militating against full adaptation to media convergence by broadcast professionals in the stations.
Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that both Channels TV and Arise News TV have adopted media convergence approaches; this reflects in changes in content delivery, and dissemination.
Unique Contribution: The study provides fresh insights into the complex and rapidly evolving media landscape in Nigeria. It is hoped that the new insights would be of benefits to media organisations seeking to navigate the challenges and opportunities of media convergence.
Key Recommendation: The recommendations for this study include making funds available to upgrade facilities for production, training and retraining broadcast professionals on the ethics and use of media resources and providing an effective and efficient power supply system in order to harness the unlimited potentials of media convergence both in the stations studied and others in the country.
