The long dominance of individual subjectivity in knowledge and the primacy of self-consciousness has certainly marked the Western philosophical and theological tradition for many centuries, but it has not been the only one. First of all, it did not
dominate classical antiquity – except in later philosophical reconstructions – and was opposed at key moments by other currents of thought. We dwell here on Arab and Latin Averroism, which innovated the conception of the noetic process and was scandalously opposed to the theologies of revealed religions with the thesis of the uniqueness of the material intellect for all men.
