Gridded product of methane emissions from Boreal-Arctic wetlands and lakes

  • 1. ROR icon University of British Columbia

Description

Methane emissions from the Boreal-Arctic region are likely to increase due to warming and permafrost thaw, but the magnitude of this increase is unconstrained. Here we show that distinguishing several wetland and lake classes improves our understanding of current and future methane emissions.

These spatial data were created using the R scripts with the mixed linear effects models and upscaling procedures found in https://github.com/kenziekuhn4/bawldCH4_scaling

The results of this analysis are in  "Current and future methane emissions from Boreal-Arctic wetlands and lakes" (in review).

Lead author is McKenzie Kuhn. Correspondence can be sent to kuhn.mckenzie@gmail.com

Units of the variables in the product are:
-Methane emissions: g CH4 m-2 yr-1 (m-2 represents total grid cell area)

The spatial resolution of the product is 0.5 degrees and covers the boreal-Arctic biomes. The files are in WGS84.

The ESRI shape file includes 5 data layers:

  1. Annual emissions from wetlands (bogs, fens, marshes, permafrost bogs, wet tundra): "wet_an"
  2. Annual emissions from lakes: "Lake_an"
  3. Annual emissions from rivers: "RIV_an"
  4. Annual emissions from upland tundra: "upT"
  5. Annual emissions from rivers: "Bor_an"
  6. Annual emissions from all ecosystems: "total"
