"MARITES": A COGNITIVE STRATEGY IN IMPROVING STUDENTS' ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

Majority of the Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences students at Carrascal National High School have experienced difficulty in expressing their thoughts and opinions using an English language. Instead of improving oneself, he/she focused more on sharing hearsays and embodied the “marites” culture inside the classroom. As a result, the researcher took advantage on the idea of being “marites” and developed action research entitled, “MARITES”: A Cognitive Strategy in Improving Students’ English Language Proficiency.” The research is divided into two phases: the first two phases will be for the speakers and the remaining two phases will be for the listeners.

The study utilized qualitative research applying phenomenological design and used content analysis to identify themes gathered from the interviews and observations conducted by the researcher. Triangulation techniques were also applied to measure reliability and validity of data. During the data analysis, majority of the participants mentioned that the intervention has helped them improved their English language proficiency.
