Description

While the FAIR principles are a widely used standard for academic research, applying them to qualitative data raises a substantial number of challenges. This presentation can be used to discuss these challenges among university research support staff who work with various types of qualitative data.

The first part of the presentation seeks to establish common ground on the concept of FAIR principles and the diverse ways in which institutes classify data as qualitative. Both of these concepts are described in this part of the presentation. The second part focuses on the research lifecycle, introducing some of the best practices on how to manage a qualitative research project that wants to make its research data reusable. Suggestions are made on how to encourage the creation of reusable qualitative data during the phases of research planning, data organisation, and data publishing. Also, some new or future developments are introduced that have the potential to innovate the way that qualitative data can be reused. The last part of the presentation encourages participants to discuss what can be done to improve the integration of reusable qualitative data in each institute and what common needs exist to encourage this integration.
