Authors/Creators

Description

This paper explores the role of sociolinguistics in English language teaching (ELT) by examining how sociolinguistic competence can be integrated into teacher training. It begins by defining sociolinguistics and its relevance to language education, drawing on Bayyurt’s expanded 2013 perspective. The paper highlights the importance of fostering sociolinguistic awareness in future English teachers to navigate sociocultural differences and enhance language acquisition. Additionally, it reviews studies on language attitudes, demonstrating how both students’ and teachers’ perceptions of language impact learning outcomes. The paper also discusses the pivotal role of culture in language learning, emphasizing the need for cultural knowledge to support effective language instruction. Finally, it outlines strategies for enhancing sociolinguistic competence among teachers, including the development of intercultural communicative competence, technological proficiency, and case study skills. The article concludes that a holistic approach to sociolinguistic competence is essential for effective language teaching, contributing to both teacher development and improved student outcomes in diverse cultural contexts.
