Abstract
Background- Undernutrition and tuberculosis are the major concerns of underdeveloped regions of the world. Tuberculosis makes undernutrition worse and undernutrition weakens immunity, thereby increasing the likelihood that latent Tuberculosis will develop into active disease. Nevertheless little has been understood about undernutrition due to infectious disease including Tuberculosis in Ethiopia. This study aimed to fill this gap by studying the magnitude of undernutrition and associated factors among adult patients with TB in Jowhar public health facilities.
Objective: to assess the Magnitude of Undernutrition among tuberculosis patients in Jowhar TB hospital.
Methodology: Institutional-based retrospective study was conducted in Jowhar, from February 2023 to May the total sample size of the study was 50 The source populations were TB patients who have followed up for TB treatment at public health facilities of Jowhar. The sample size was allocated to the selected health facilities proportional to their size, and study subjects were enrolled to the study during the study period. Data were collected by a structured data sheet from the selected health center registration book. Data were entered into Data software and analyzed by using SPSS version 26. Descriptive statistical methods were used to summarize the socio demographic characteristics of the study participants
Result:
In this study, the magnitude of undernutrition was found to be 48 %.( 50 patients), 5(10%) of this have normal weight, 24(48%) have underweight and 21(420% have severe Undernutrition. Furthermore, 5(10%) had normal weight based on BMI classification.
Conclusion: The magnitude of undernutrition was found to be high. Age greater than forty five, living in rural area problem with eating and lack of nutritional care and support were the factors independently associated with undernutrition of TB patients. The nutritional derangement could call for fast nutritional intervention in the management of pulmonary tuberculosis patients.
