Description

The English translation of the title of this paper is:

"Preliminary study on the determination of the elastic modulus of painted canvases using a non-destructive method"

The paper presents the use of a Dynamic Modulus Tester, to measure the speed of an elastic wave within the materials of the painting. The main research question, measuring the decrease in the elastic modulus of a lined painting over time, appears outdated and the approach can be questioned.

Still, the main assumption behind the approach presented in this paper appears to be interesting as it is different from the current methods used in conservation science.

The elastic modulus of a painting is measured here as "object related", i.e. it is calculated with an approach that appears to be similar to that of the use of the tensile elastic modulus formula by calculating stress and strain on the cross-section of the sample as if it were a homogeneous material.

The current methods used in conservation science are instead based on calculating of the modulus of each constituent layer, and attempting to reduce them to something as close as possible to a homogeneous material by calculating the loaded cross section.

It would be very interesting to test the tool and compare the results.
