Astronomical Observations of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks: From Initial Activity in June 2023 to Post-Perihelion Outbursts in 2024
Authors/Creators
Description
This study documents the astronomical observations of the comet 12P/Pons-Brooks during its most recent return to the inner Solar System. Spanning from the initial signs of activity observed on June 13, 2023, to April 2024, the observations cover a wide range of heliocentric distances, from 4.26 AU to 0.85 AU. Over this period, the comet exhibited a total of 14 distinct outbursts, providing valuable insights into its dynamic behavior and activity levels.
After reaching perihelion in April 2024, the comet continued to show considerable activity, experiencing two additional outbursts at heliocentric distances of 1.20 AU and 2.26 AU, respectively. These post-perihelion outbursts were significant, marking a continuation of the comet's activity despite its increasing distance from the Sun.
This Annotation Collection is intended to provide a selection of sample images of Comet 12P, illustrating its activity over the course of these observational periods. The images serve as supplementary material to the work of Gritsevich et al. (2025), offering a visual complement to the findings and contributing to a deeper understanding of the comet’s behavior during its return.
