Description

Turkologists have put forward and discussed various views on the functions of complement markers such as  -DIK and -mA, such as tense, aspect, modality, finiteness, factuality, eventfulness, and information content. In the literature, it has mostly been suggested that  -DIK and -mA markers are used to mark factual and non-factual clauses, and narrowly-scoped complement verb lists have been presented. The  -DIK and -mA-selecting verb lists prepared by linguists based on linguistic intuition, which contain incomplete and incorrect determinations, are not comprehensive and are not capable of describing the entire behavior of Turkish complement verbs. Which lexical meaning of Turkish verbs requires which complement and marker can only be fully determined with a comprehensive and corpus-based approach. In this study, it is claimed that the choice of subordinate clause complement and complement marker in Turkish is determined by the lexical meaning of the root or stem of the verb and the valency information, and the functions of the subordinate clause complement are determined by the inflected or predicate forms of the main sentence verb. In the study, it is claimed that a limited number of complement verbs gain polysemy according to the choice of complementizer and nominalizer and are subject to grammaticalization under the effect of frequency use, and it is emphasized which grammatical categories are marked by the analytical grammatical structures that develop as a result of grammaticalization.

Keywords: complementation, nominalization, coplemtizer/ nominalizer, drammaticalization, polsemy.
