Abstract (English)

Nursing as a profession has a specific role in society. The identity of this role is rich of empathy, skills, willingness, sacrifice, but also knowledge and perseverance. Society in general attributes to nursing professionals that the nursing profession is valued in society. Nursing is a profession from which patients and the healthcare system have high expectations. Nurses are prepared with the knowledge and skills (competencies) to practise. Furthermore, professional presence reaches beyond the uniform to include self-confidence and a way of being, knowing and doing as a nurse. Being a nurse means to work, think having in mind always necessity of: accountability; ethical and honest norms (integrity); clinical competence; respectful collaboration; effective communication; words and language reflecting care; having a sense of duty; being reflective in practice and open to change; having a sense of optimism; showing compassion and empathy; and looking professional. Today, the nursing profession is in crisis. The pandemic crisis has made these problems more visible and intense. Insufficient resources, lack of staff, mobility and increased demands affect the quality of work, increase the risk of burnout and giving up the profession and therefore represent a major challenge for health systems. On the other hand, the nursing profession is essential and opens numerous opportunities to strengthen the health systems by strengthening nursing. This paper will discuss the possibilities that lie ahead of us in the development of nursing.
