Description
This is a chapter from the free textbook "Economic Principles in Cell Biology"
Organisms growing in uncertain environments may change their physiological state as the environment changes. We discuss the extent to which random changes may be beneficial, in analogy to strategies that financial investors use to diversify their portfolios. To this end, we present simple mathematical models that describe and formalize how information can be processed by populations to adapt to environmental variations.
