Description
This study explores the thematic intricacies of love, loneliness, isolation, and sexual violence in two seminal works by Korean director Kim Ki-duk: 3-Iron shot in 2004, and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring shot in 2003. Such pieces of art, characterized by a minimum of script and complex meaning behind gestures, present humanity’s most acute reactions and responses to each other an intimate note on affection and touch. It is a drama of a young man who roams around in solitude and makes a wordless connection with a battered wife; it investigates the unseen suffering like loneliness, and touches on the issue of sexual abuse in a rather clandestine manner. ‘Seasons of Pale Mankind: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring”, is a circular story of a tale envisioned in a clad monastery following the journey of enlightenment of a monk and his disciple where motifs of love and loneliness with seasons: cycle of nature and man’s journey through life exist side by side. Both depicted films that are rather the meagre number of dialogues, and the use of many and manifold imagery convey Kim Ki-duk’s vision of the less pleasant and, at the same time, subtler aspects of interpersonal relationships. This work will seek to decode these films to understand the narrative and semi- logical levels of Kim Ki-duk’s films: in particular, how the director’s use of silence and visually coded images elicits a learning process that raises a multifaceted reflection on love, loneliness, and isolation as well as the effects of sexual violence.
