En el presente trabajo se realiza un balance historiográfico sobre la arqueología subacuática en Sicilia y en las islas de menor tamaño que la rodean y que conforman la Región Siciliana (Italia), desde sus inicios hasta la actualidad, comprobando los aciertos y errores de esta destacada línea de investigación. También se esbozan sucintamente los motivos por los que la Superintendencia del Mar se ha convertido en un referente a nivel internacional. Se ha partido de la revisión exhaustiva de la bibliografía de referencia y de los archivos insulares, para posteriormente sintetizar la información obtenida. Con ello hemos podido mostrar los principales hitos de la arqueología subacuática siciliana y los motivos del éxito de esta gracias a una administración eficaz.
Abstract (English)
Sicily, Underwater Archaeology, and the Birth of the Superintendence of the Sea: A Historiographical Review. This paper presents a state of the art on underwater archaeology in Sicily and on the smaller islands that surround it, which make up the Sicilian Region (Italy), from its beginnings to the present day, showing the successes and failures of this outstanding line of research. It also briefly outlines the reasons why the Superintendence of the Sea has become an international benchmark. We have started with an exhaustive review of the reference bibliography and the island archives, and then synthesized the information obtained to show the main milestones of Sicilian underwater archaeology and the reasons for its success thanks to an efficient administration.
