Description

A final project summary video explains the concept of a novel energy system developed under the NAUTILUS project, which aims to significantly reduce emissions produced by maritime transport. The NAUTILUS Genset is a groundbreaking maritime power system designed for long-haul passenger ships, combining SOFC fuel cells and battery technology for marine applications. The goal of the project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program and coordinated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics was to validate the concept that gradually replacing traditional internal combustion engines with advanced electrochemical processes. The innovative NAUTILUS Genset demonstrator features a 60-kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) integrated with a 20-kW Li-ion battery, showcasing a pioneering hybrid propulsion system. This adaptable setup can scale to meet the energy needs of ships carrying between 1,000 and 5,000 passengers and supports a variety of fuels. It is designed to fulfill diverse ship energy requirements—from propulsion and manoeuvring to hotel amenities—while achieving up to a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions and an impressive 95% decrease in non-CO2 pollutants.
